Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
To the true believer, the holy bible is the "divinely inspired" Word of God.
It is the ultimate standard of measurement for Christian conduct, Church order and doctrine.
Psalm 119:89 For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.
It is impossible for us to improve upon the divine revelation contained within God's Word!
So perfect is His Word that God issued this warning,
Deuteronomy 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
This warning is further emphasized in the last book of the bible,
Revelation 22:18-19
18) For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19) And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
Without understanding the past history of the church, you are unable to understand the church today,.
The past history of the church tradition's still lives and influences who you and how you understand the Christian message.
The notion that you read the New Testament exactly as the early Christians did, without any weight of tradition coloring your interpretation, is an illusion.
You do yourself a disservice by ignoring your Christian history.
It makes you poorer both historically and doctrinally.
It is also a dangerous illusion, for it tends to absolutize your interpretation, confusing it with the Word of God.
Exodus 20:8-11
8) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9) Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10) But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11) For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
